Building and maintenance of forest roads in Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russia

  • Education and training of forest leasers and administration of Nizhny Novgorod Region in planning, building and maintaining forest roads. 
  • A forest road was built to demonstrate Finnish construction techniques


Contributing to the Regional Forest Plan of Carelia, Russia

  • Consulting in developing a sustainable forestry policy and a forest bio-energy policy for the Forest Plan of Carelia (2008). 


Recommendations for silvicultural methods, part of Sub-Regional Forest Management Plans in Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russia

  • The project aimed at developing the regional forest management norms by adapting Scandinavian management practices to Russian forest legislation. 
  • The management recommendations were published in the Forest Plans of all 36 forest departments. 


Enhancing the Training of Collaborative Planning in Natural Resource Management (EnTraCoP)

  • Collaborative planning skills and performance of planners in natural resource and environmental planning processes were strengthened in the partner countries 
  • Countries involved: Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ireland


Benefits of Scandinavian silvicultural methods and justifications for changing the current Russian legislation

  • Scandinavian silvicultural methods were compared to the Russian forest legislation in order to find justification to change forestry regulations into a more sustainable direction. 


Forest landscape cultural heritage protection and benefits to forestry and tourism

  • Inventories of cultural heritage sites in three Estonian counties was carried out. The project increased the awareness on the importance of cultural heritage objects among the public, forest owners and state officials.

Wood as an energy source in the enlarging Europe

  • The current utilization of wood energy in Europe was assessed, including an analysis of the development in the EU applicant countries and relevant European neighbourhood countries. 
  • Provided objectives and insight for future wood energy strategies and assessed how the promotion of wood energy should be included to EU's energy and forest strategies.

Demonstration of methods to monitor sustainable forestry

  • A Gap-analysis was made, identifying the lacks in knowledge concerning forest monitoring methods in the EU participant countries. 
  • As a result new monitoring methods were developed for practical use and they were connected to the implementation of forest legislation 
  • Countries involved: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Sweden


Use of forest energy and wood energy supply security in Lithuania

  • The project monitored possibilities of converting from oil to bio energy in heating systems.

Technical support to the Estonian Forest Development Plan

  • The project supported the preparation of the Estonian National Forest Programme: Two reports were made: 1. Forest communication, 2. EU membership affect on Finnish forestry

Assessing forest stand attributes by integrated use of high-resolution satellite imagery and laser scanner (HIGH-SCAN)

  • Methods were tested for the integrated use of laser scanner and high-resolution satellite imagery and mapping to get specific forest attributes

  • Support to sustainable forest management on the Karelian Isthmus. Especially landscape ecological planning of forestry and protection of biodiversity were key issues of the project.

  • Technical expertise was provided to assess different monitoring methods on how ecological, economic and social goals of sustainable forestry are achieved in practical forestry operations 
  • The follow-up methods used by the forestry authorities in Norway, Sweden and Finland were surveyed, compared and analyzed in relation to the national forest policies

Technical assistance for the Development of Private Forestry in Latvia

  • Technical support in forestry extension and development of extension material, forest management planning and establishing demonstration areas for the training of forest owners

Estonian Forestry Development Programme

  • Support in formulating the National Forest Policy and respective development programmes in the private forestry with the emphasis on an operational framework, forest owners' associations, taxation and legal issues, forestry extension, forest management planning, as well as trade and measurement of timber

Development of Forest Owners' Organizations and Mechanical Wood Industries Organizations in Latvia (participation)

  • The different alternatives and proposals for developing forest owners' and mechanical wood industries interest organisations were analysed and a strategy for institutional strengthening was made.

  • The project provided support for the creation of a forest management planning system. Analysis and advice for re-organization of the private forestry administration, forestry extension and establishing a interest organization for non-industrial private forestry.
