Harvesting energy wood supports the production of industrial wood
The stemwood removed when tending young stands, while not suitable as industrial wood, is well suited for energy generation. The logging residues and stumps left on the site following final cutting can also be made use of.Energy-wood harvesting is appropriate in those young stands where tending has been inadequate and where there is relatively little wood that meets industrial wood criteria. The harvesting of energy wood improves the profitability of the first thinning of industrial wood. Energy-wood harvesting is part of the tending chain when the objective is the production of high-quality pine.
A portion of the branchwood and foliage always remains unharvested on the forest floor, and this means that the nutrients bound in them continue to be cycled in the forest ecosystem. They are not harvested at all if the humus layer is thin, or if there is a risk of nutrient deficiency. Harvesting of the crown biomass from the buffer zones along watercourses reduces the impact of their nutrient load.
The harvesting of the stumps reduces the risk of annosum root disease and the costs of soil preparation. Old stumps and some of the freshly-cut stumps are left on the logging site if the site has been observed to be free of the annosum root disease. Stumps are not harvested on sites near groundwater areas and watercourses.
