Use of bioenergy to be unified in the Baltic Sea Region

Tapio is one of the partners in the EU-financed Bioenergy Promotion project. Its essential objective is to unify the policy and practical activities concerning bioenergy use in the Baltic Sea Region. Tapio will co-operate with other partners, mainly in developing the guidance concerning  means of sustainability, i.e. legislation, directives and criterias as well as certification.

Besides Finland there are altogether 36 partners in the project, including Sweden as lead partner, Denmark, Germany, Poland, the Baltic countries and outside of EU from Norway and Belarus. University of Joensuu and Motiva Oy are the other two Finnish partners.  

Sustainable use in focus

The kick-off seminar was held in February in Stockholm and the plan is to arrange a larger workshop in November In Helsinki, where the preliminary results of the first year will be summed up .

Project work is done in three Work Packages:

  • Promoting sustainable policy development in the countries of the Baltic Sea Region (legislation, criteria of sustainable use and certification)
  • Developing sub-regional and local activities for the sustainable use of bioenergy
  • Providing information about bioenergy use technologies and best practices for business development

The project is co-financed by EU's Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 and it is co-ordinated by the Swedish Energy Agency. The project lasts for three years 2009-2011 and its'  total budget is 5,3 mill. euros.
